Now a mature tree, appropriately the coronation hawthorn displays its floral beauty at the time of the anniversary of the coronation.  The tree's growth has had to contend with the very shallow covering of soil over the deep limestone bedrock of the Urswick Limestone Formation, together with the mainly south-westerly winds which are responsible for the distinct bending of the trunk in involuntary submission to the wind's strength and persistence.
