Comment:
Gleaston village, cared for by Aldingham Parish Council, retains
many of its old dwelling houses and, in some cases, accompanying
stone out-buildings as seen in this photograph at the main
cross-roads in the village. The direction sign is accommodated
within one of the mill stones of old, no doubt originating from the
18th century water mill located on the outskirts of the village and
featured in Picture of the Month for March 2015. In this
instance, a rural artefact, together with a reasonable expectation of
driver common sense, directs the traffic of modern times without prejudice
to, and even enhancing, the overall rural ambience which in so many
places is so dismissively and irretrievably sacrificed.
