This photograph looks east from the high ground of Bolton Heads to the village of Scales in the middle distance.  Beyond Scales and across Morecambe Bay is the seaside town of Morecambe backed along the horizon to the right by the beautiful hill country of the Forest of Bowland.  Surely few would argue that the trees in this landscape do other than add to its charm and quality, but it should also be noted that firstly, there are no juvenile trees planted across this swath of countryside to replace those seen when the end of their life comes around; and secondly, there are significant areas within the landscape where there is already an absence of trees.
