Comment:
This photograph is taken from the
Adgarley end of the village of Stainton with Adgarley looking
towards Stainton. The foreground section of the village green is
Adgarley Green but as the houses seen in the photograph are
approached that section of the green is Stainton Green. The tall
property without masonry paint is Stainton Hall, a Grade II listed
old mansion house. The village green is noted for a fine collection
of glacially deposited limestone erratics, some of which are to be
seen in this photograph. Rare in modern times, Stainton with
Adgarley still has three working farms integral within the village.
Ancient grazing rights on the village green are still availed of and
in the summer the grass is allowed to grow to produce a crop of hay
grass for one of the farms.
