The hill between Little Urswick and Hawkfield is known as Quernbarrow Hill.  This arises from the hill being a source for a suitable sandstone for the manufacture of querns. The sandstone forms a cap on the top of the hill and evidence of a small ancient and now overgrown quarrying operation to access the sandstone may be seen from the road near the summit of the hill.
