Spell and knur is a game believed to have originated in the 14th century in the north of England.  The knur is a hardwood or pottery ball about the size of a walnut, whilst the spell is a stick with a hardwood end used for striking the knur.  The knur is sprung into the air from a trap and the objective is for the player to see how far they can hit the knur.
